Rules of Play for Youth Rugby

NON-CONTACT YOUTH RUGBY RULES OF PLAY

The AYRU follows USA Rugby's "Rookie Rugby" rules of play for all non-contact matches at the U9, U11, U13 and U15 age levels, with the following exceptions:

  • The AYRU uses the "toe-n-go" to kick-off the game and restart play for on field infringements.
  • After a two hand tag - play is restarted with a "ruck touch" by rolling the ball between the tagged players legs. After 6 tags the ball turned over to the other team to start with a "toe-n-go"
  • The notion of "play" after a tag is automically assumed unless otherwise specified by the referee.
  • Unopposed scrums and line-outs are incorporated into the U13 and U15 non-contact matches.

Please follow the document link below for full details of the Rookie Rugby non-contact game and the rules of play.

CONTACT YOUTH RUGBY RULES OF PLAY

The AYRU follows USA Rugby's "Rookie Rugby Sevens" rules of play for all contact matches at the U13 and U15 age levels.

Dangerous tackling and other unsafe play is strictly enforced by referees through a warning, Sin Bin and expulsion from match protocol.

Please follow the document links below for full details of the Rookie Rugby Sevens contact game and the rules of play.

PLAYER ELIGIBILITY

Without exception, all players must be registered and paid-in-full with the AYRU and USA Rugby (a.k.a. CIPP) to be eligible for match play.  They also must be in good standing with the referees society.
