Rugby Season Details - Young Highlanders and AYRU
Mar 6, 2010, 6:37 pmDear Parents and Ruggers!
Activity for the Spring season of youth non-contact rugby with the
AYRU (www.ayru.com) and the Young Highlanders RFC is ready to get
going. As many of you already know, the Young Highlanders are a new
team in the AYRU that will focus on youth in the Northeast Heights
Area of Albuquerque. We have two other teams in the northeast area
of Albuquerque, plus teams from Rio Rancho, Corrales, the West Side,
and possibly Los Lunas. It should be a fun season!
IMPORTANT DATES for the team and upcoming season are:
* Sunday, March 7th - Informal gathering at 1:00 of kids from all
area teams interested in playing "touch" at Montgomery Park. The
focus here is mainly on having fun and throwing the ball around a
bit. We usually wrap things up between 2:00 and 2:30. Don't worry
if you can't make this.
* Tuesday, March 9th - First practice for the Highlanders starts at
5:30 at El Oso Grande Park on Morris and Osuna. Practice will last
for an hour and it's OK if you arrive a bit late. I can accommodate
everyone's schedules as needed.
* Friday, April 9th - First match. Details to be announced.
PRACTICES - We will continue to have practices at El Oso Grande
every Tuesday at 5:30 for one hour. The only exception will be
Tuesday, March 16th, when we don't have any practice planned because
of Spring Break. El Dorado's high school rugby team (boys and
girls) also practices at this park so it can be good opportunity for
parents and kids alike to see the "big kids" in action.
PRACTICE GEAR - Just come dressed in comfortable clothes for
running around. Soccer type gear is fine, and cleats or sneakers
are good too. No shin guards needed. Even though we play non-
contact, we do encourage the kids to practice with mouth guard just
in case they bump into each other.
MATCHES - Matches will start on April 7th, and are played on Friday
evenings. Additional matches will be played on April 16th, 23rd,
30th, and May 7th and 21st. We also have a tournament on May 16th
during the Celtic Fest held at Balloon Fiesta Park.
REGISTRATION - Registration is very simple to do online at the AYRU
website. Registration fee this year should be around $35 and will include a uniform and ball. I'll update everyone at practices.
PLEASE BRING A FRIEND OR TWO! - If your child has any friends
(boys and girls) that they think may be interested they are most
welcome to come along. We are grateful for all the little ones we
can gather up
Please don't hesitate to drop me a line if you have additional
questions. Look forward to seeing many of you soon,
Tom Goslau
